AP Limited Editions Urushi Lacquer Art Fountain Pen - Ishiji Black & Gold
AP Limited Editions Urushi Lacquer Art Fountain Pen – Ishiji Black & Gold
The Ishiji Black & Gold fountain pen embodies the refined minimalism and patience that define AP Limited Editions’ approach to contemporary urushi art. Each piece is hand-finished in Japan by master artisans using the centuries-old Ishiji technique—a process that builds texture and depth through countless layers of lacquer. The result is a surface that appears soft and organic, yet glows with a quiet metallic radiance.
The deep black body of the pen is finished with a subtle, grain-like pattern—each one unique to the individual craftsman’s hand. Gold dust is applied with precision and restraint, producing a luminous contrast that feels both modern and ancient. Every pen requires weeks of layering, polishing, and curing under tightly controlled conditions, reflecting the traditional rhythm of urushi art rather than industrial production.
Beneath its artistry, the Ishiji Black & Gold is designed for long-term use. It features a 14-karat gold nib paired with a plastic feed, ensuring a naturally responsive writing experience. The pen uses a cartridge/converter filling system, allowing for modern versatility while preserving the tactile warmth of handmade construction.
Produced in small batches, this edition captures the essence of AP Limited Editions’ philosophy—respect for heritage, mastery of material, and the pursuit of quiet excellence.

Materials and care
Materials and care
- Avoid direct exposure to sunlight or strong UV light. Urushi lacquer is sensitive to prolonged sun exposure and may dull or become brittle over time.
- Store the pen in a stable, indoor environment avoiding extremes of heat, cold or humidity. A relative humidity around 70–80 % and moderate temperature preserves lacquer integrity.
- Clean the exterior gently using a soft, dry microfiber cloth. If necessary, you may lightly moisten the cloth with clean water; avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents as they can damage the lacquer finish.
- Do not soak the pen or use an ultrasonic cleaning device on the lacquered surface—moisture and agitation can cause delamination or surface irregularities.
- While in use or storage, avoid impact or dropping the pen, and remove any sweat, salt or harsh chemicals from contact with the pen body — these may etch the surface or alter the finish over time.
- With proper care, your urushi-finished pen is not just a writing instrument—it is a heirloom object designed to retain its beauty and performance across decades.
